The exhaust of every internal combustion engine on any motorized boat shall be effectively muffled by a muffler or underwater exhaust. The use of cutouts is prohibited, except for motorized boats competing in an approved race or trial run.

Discharge of sewage
It is illegal to discharge any sewage from a boat into the waters of the state unless discharged via a marine toilet which is either a Marine Sanitation Device (MSD)-Type I, or a MSD-Type II, and it must be in proper working condition.
No Discharge Zones
It is illegal to discharge any sewage from a boat into Rhode Island’s waterways. Boaters must understand that EVERY waterway in the state of Rhode Island is considered to be a “No Discharge Zone”. Additionally, it is illegal to moor a boat on Rhode Island waterways if it is equipped with a marine toilet which is not properly sealed to prevent the discharge of sewage into the water.
Marine Sanitation Devices
It is illegal to operate or moor a boat which is equipped with a MSD which is not a type approved pursuant to the Clean Water Act, and that is not in proper working condition.
