Why Do I Need a New York Boater Safety Certificate?

New York boating safety has been top of mind since former Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Brianna’s Law into action for New York State boaters. The law — named after 11-year-old Brianna Lieneck, who died in a boating accident in 2005 — was signed into place to ensure boater safety and know-how on New York waters.

With this NY State Senate Bill in place, there has been a phased-in schedule on who is required to be certified to operate a motorized vessel in New York.

The law set up phases for boaters to get their New York Boating Safety Certificate. It was set up by age and spanned five years starting in 2020 for those born after January 1, 1993. By January 2025, any boat operator of any age must have their New York boating license.

If you’re caught operating a watercraft on New York waters without your license for boating, you can be fined up to $250.
